With Shailendra Bhandare, Ashmolean Curator of South Asian and Far-Eastern Coins and Paper Money
Join curator Shailendra Bhandare for a private after-hours tour of our new exhibition, Money Talks: Art, Society & Power, exploring the place of money in our world through different artistic lenses and the way currency and art come together in design and culture to promote or challenge our views.
This small, group tour is a wonderful opportunity to discover the stories behind the over 100 objects on display. These include works by Rembrandt and Warhol as well as Roman, Chinese and Islamic coins, Art Nouveau banknotes, and the artwork for the currency featuring Kings Edward VIII and Charles III, on display for the first time.
One of a set of Edward VIII coin pattern designs made before the King abdicated, 1937 © Royal Mint Museum
MIDAS, Transmuting all into GOLD PAPER, James Gillray, hand-coloured etching on laid paper © New College Oxford
Draft artwork for 50-crown note for the Austro-Hungarian Bank, Koloman Moser, 1902, gouache & coloured pencil on graph paper © Money Museum of the Austrian National Bank
Shailendra will share his reflections on the intersections between money and art and the way artists have long explored and commented upon the balance between power and wealth through using money artistically in novel ways.
