Owning the Past Gertrude Bell in Iraq 1909

Gertrude Bell was an English writer, traveller, political officer and archaeologist. An Oxford alumnus, she travelled extensively in the Middle East and her attitudes and understanding of the region, its peoples, and histories were instrumental in the establishment of the modern state of Iraq. In 2017, Collins co-edited ‘Gertrude Bell and Iraq: a life and legacy’. He is also co-curator of the our Gallery 8 exhibition 'Owning the Past: From Mesopotamia to Iraq', open until 16 May 2021.
