SEND

We welcome and support children with different learning needs to the Museum

Our school sessions are planned as inclusive learning opportunities for all students who visit with their school. They are designed to support students with SEND to encourage creative responses and develop communication and cognitive skills. Our sessions are planned in consultation with teachers.

What we need from teachers:

  • It is essential that you bring 3 adults with each class size group on the day. This is to support small group work during the session and for health and safety reasons.
  • Any adults providing 1-1 support for students should be in addition to this number to ensure there are always 3 adults with the group at all times.
  • Please ensure that you communicate as much information about SEND needs as possible at the time of booking so we can plan to support your visit.
  • Please ensure you plan for the needs of students in your Risk Assessment.

What we offer teachers:

  • Communication and consultation with teachers in advance to plan to support the special educational needs of students
  • Access information including Social Guides, floorplan, toilets, lifts - for more information visit our Access webpage
  • SEND bags containing fidget toys, etch a sketch, blank postcards and coloured pencils
  • Additional resources and support e.g. raised images and additional handling material for children with visual impairment and adapted tours for children with hearing impairments
  • Design and delivery of bespoke visits for groups of students from special schools or as part of gifted and talented programmes
  • If you have booked a lunch space, this may be used as a breakout space if it is available. Please note the rooms contain tables and chairs and may be used by other groups on the day. If your students may need a breakout space please let us know at the time of booking.
  • Outreach sessions to children who can’t travel to the Museum e.g. special schools and hospital schools.
